Motorola is joining the modular smartphone race with the Moto Z and Moto Z Force.

Apple Pay is struggling to gain traction outside the United States, with the mobile payment system failing to capture the imagination in the UK, Australia and China.

According to one analyst, Apple Pay's inability to move into the mainstream here in the UK is due to the prevalence of contactless cards.

A total of $14 billion was spent using contactless in 2015, with that figure expected to rise this year.

“You have over 86 million contactless cards in circulation. [So] you have to persuade Britons to register their cards to [Apple Pay] when they can already use them to make a contactless payment,” said Windsor Holden of Juniper Research.

In Australia, Apple is said to have faced technical difficulties in some retail outlets, while China’s booming mobile payments industry has meant it has struggled to compete with the likes of WeChat and Alibaba.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 6 is expected to launch this summer. We've already heard that it could have a USB Type-C port, but now comes word that it could also be an absolute powerhouse.

The iPhone is about to become much more useful for work. That's because Apple has signed a deal with Germany-based business app maker SAP to make the iPhone and iPad more appealing to enterprise users.

The partnership will result in a new software development kit (SDK) made by Apple and SAP that will let developers make business-focussed apps. There will also be a training academy for learning how to best use iOS to benefit users' businesses.

"This partnership will transform how iPhone and iPad are used in enterprise by bringing together the innovation and security of iOS with SAP's deep expertise in business software," Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a statement.

"As the leader in enterprise software and with 76 per cent of business transactions touching an SAP system, SAP is the ideal partner to help us truly transform how businesses around the world are run on iPhone and iPad."

Cook also tweeted the news.

This isn't the first time Apple has tried to position its devices as business tools. It currently works with IBM to make iOS apps for various industries and to deploy iOS technology in the field.

Microsoft and to a lesser extent BlackBerry are still seen as the dominant tech companies when it comes to business. We'll have to see whether Apple's consumer-friendly devices can make it big in the workplace.

The only sure way to get the latest update first is to have a Nexus device.

iOS 9, by contrast, is on 77 per cent of all active iOS devices. And that's despite launching only five months ago.

Google will hold its annual I/O conference in a couple of weeks, where it will show off Android N. Hopefully it can come up with a solution to its fragmentation problem.

Apple has started offering a 50% discount for students when they subscribe to its Apple Music streaming service. That means that if you’re studying you can listen to millions of tracks and playlists for £4.99 a month.

The discount will be available to students for a total of four years, making it an enticing proposition compared with Spotify and Tidal.

Despite now having 13 million subscribers, Apple Music has been criticised for its unwieldy design.

It's also been on the receiving end of complaints from users who say that the streaming service has caused local music files to be deleted from their iTunes libraries.

The student-friendly price cut, however, should help the company grow Apple Music at a faster rate and take the fight to its rivals.

The news comes just days after a report claimed that Apple was priming a major overhaul of its streaming service.

The company is said to be plotting a new black and white design, as well as making lyrics available and improving browsing.

The updated Apple Music is expected to make its debut at Apple’s WWDC event, which starts on June 13th in San Francisco.

Vodafone has revealed it will offer free roaming in 40 European destinations for both new and upgrading pay monthly customers on its Red and Red Value packages.


The network’s move comes after Tesco Mobile confirmed it is scrapping roaming charges for the summer across Europe.

Vodafone’s announcement puts it alongside Tesco and Three when it comes to using a smartphone abroad. Calls, texts and picture messages will all be free while abroad.

However, customers looking to use data will find that their UK bundles are capped at a lower rate when travelling.

Users will be able to use no more than 4GB of data when abroad, even if they pay for a 12GB package in the UK.

Vodafone’s 8GB Red Value plan will score you 2GB of data while on foreign shores.

While this is still generous, it means users should keep a keen eye on how much data they’re using, so as not to avoid any additional costs.

Streaming music and video will quickly eat into data allowances.

Apple has revealed that it sold a record number of iPhones in the three months from October to December 2015. However, the 74.779 million units sold compares to 74.468 million in the same period in 2014, suggesting iPhone demand has plateaued.

With the iPhone making up a colossal 68% of all the company’s earnings, that points to iPhone sales sliding for the first time since the original version of the smartphone was launched nine years ago this month.

Barclays, the last of the UK’s major banks not to offer Apple Pay, will rollout the service to its customers by April at the latest.

The bank’s CEO, Ashok Vaswani, personally emailed customer Oli Foster-Burnell to say that the service would be available within 60 to 75 days. It has been speculated that it could launch on March 28th.

Vaswani said that Barclays will "launch Apple Pay, as committed, within the next 60 to 75 days".

Last year, the bank said it would make Apple Pay available early in 2016. Its failure to deliver the service alongside the likes of Halifax, Natwest and HSBC has left some customers so irate that they have changed banks.

Apple Pay launched in the UK in June. Since then its growing popularity and the boom in contactless payments has forced Barclays’ hand, despite the bank offering its own bPay platform, which has so far failed to gain mainstream traction.

Sourced by @OnLeaks, AKA Steve Hemmerstoffer of Nowwhereelse.fr, on behalf of uSwitch, the images are so-called 'CAD design renders' which are sent by Apple to third-party case manufacturers ahead of the release of new phones. The accessory-makers can then use the designs to manufacture cases that are compatible.

The big reveal from this set of renders is that they add more weight to rumours that the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus will be thicker than their predecessors.

It's thought this is to avoid a repeat of criticism that last year’s model wasn’t as robust as it should’ve been and bent in users’ pockets.

While the iPhone 6 came in at 6.9mm thick, the iPhone 6S is 7.1mm, according to our source.

The iPhone 6S Plus, which was the model most often cited in the so-called 'bendgate' scandal, has also been body-building. It’s gone from 7.1mm thick to 7.3mm, we were told.

Intriguingly, it also appears that the protruding camera that featured on the iPhone 6 could be missing from the iPhone 6S but will reappear on the iPhone 6S Plus.

This possibility stems from the 6S Plus renders, which outline that it's 7.8mm thick.

Apple is working on launching its own mobile virtual network operator (MVNO), with the California company already testing the service in the United States. That’s the word from ‘sources close to
Apple’ who've shared the plans with Business Insider.

What’s more, Apple is said to be in talks with European networks about launching on this side of the Atlantic too.

The sources claim that such a network will allow users to buy a monthly contract directly from Apple, with a connected iPhone using an Apple SIM capable of switching between networks in order to offer the best signal.

However, don’t expect Apple to launch its MVNO alongside the iPhone 6S next month. Word is it’s looking long term with this project, with a five year timeframe mooted for a full launch.

Apple already offers its own SIM for its iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3, allowing users to switch between data contracts without having to change SIM cards when they do so.

The news comes as stories emerge about plans for an iCloud Voicemail service which will transcribe messages using Siri. Such a tool would play neatly into an Apple MVNO, cutting out the need for consumers to access their voicemails via their network and allowing Apple to control the entire smartphone ecosystem.

Apple is testing a new service which could bring an end to calling outdated voicemail services in order to access messages.

iCloud Voicemail will work with Siri in order to take calls when you can’t, rather than letting the phone ring out to your network’s own recorded message.

Siri will then be able to tell a caller why you’re unavailable and take a message. This message will then be transcribed and sent to you as an iMessage or SMS.

It could mean never having to go through multiple press button options in order to hear messages that are either unimportant or so sold that they no longer require action.

According to Business Insider, ‘multiple Apple employees’ are using the service already, with plans to launch in 2016. With Siri already getting a major upgrade as part of iOS 9, it seems this could form a key part of next year’s iOS upgrade.

As stories emerge about plans for an Apple MVNO, iCloud Voicemail makes a lot of sense. If Apple is able to completely control voice messages, there will be no need for users to interact with their network, allowing it to launch its own service that can piggyback off multiple carriers.

Advanced Semiconductor Engineering (ASE), the company which makes Apple’s system–in–packaging for its smartwatch, apparently told investors that it had failed to reach break–even volume of two million units from April to June.

Neither is it expecting to do so between July and September, when Apple could be expected to up production to ensure ample stock before Christmas.

In other words, demand is nowhere near what everyone thought it would be. Analysts are scrambling to lower predictions of global sales down.

Some had initially believed Apple would sell up to 36 million in its first year. That seems fanciful in the extreme now.

Of course, ASE is just one supplier. But it tells a story of just how a product that everyone assumed would be huge from the get go just isn’t connecting with the public.


Yes, it’s the leading smartwatch. But rival products have hardly covered themselves in glory. Android Wear remains clunky and Pebble is a cool, but niche piece of kit.

Perhaps the next generation will enthral consumers more. Or perhaps it’s time to start wondering whether smartwatches really are the future.

A handy, but ultimately non–essential accessory that only true tech obsessives will take to.

If Apple won’t release official figures, it’s no surprise that conclusions like this will be made, and increasingly so.

One market research firm reckoned sales had slipped by as much as 90% since the device’s first week on sale.

Apple must have thought it had put this story to bed, despite the fact that not offering stats is not something it’s ever done before for a major product category.

Wall Street wasn’t happy and the company’s share price duly fell.

Now, a new report once again suggests that things are really not going well for the Apple Watch.
